Does UPS Accept Doctor's Notes? Sick Days, Attendance, and Leave

Illustration representing clear, trustworthy answers about doctor's notes

Does UPS accept a doctor's note for a sick day? Most UPS employees are covered by a Teamsters contract, and paid sick leave, along with any documentation rule, is set by that local supplement rather than one UPS-wide policy. A New York-area supplement, for example, gives full-time employees eight paid sick days a year after one year of seniority. Check your own local's contract.

Most UPS package car drivers, hub workers, and other hourly employees are covered by the National Master United Parcel Service Agreement between UPS and the Teamsters, plus a local supplement specific to their region. Sick leave, and any rule about documenting an absence, comes from that supplement rather than one nationwide UPS policy, so the details genuinely differ by where you work. UPS itself doesn’t publish a single consumer-facing sick-leave or attendance policy page, since the actual terms live inside contract documents negotiated between the company and each local.

What UPS union contracts say about sick leave

The publicly posted UPS Local 804 supplement, covering the New York City area, sets out paid sick leave by seniority and employment status. Full-time employees with one year of seniority get eight paid sick days a year, and part-time employees with one year of seniority get five, with smaller amounts scheduled in for newer employees who haven’t hit a year yet. The same contract states that paid sick days will not automatically count toward disciplinary action and that each employee’s record is reviewed individually, rather than triggering automatic points. Unused sick days under that contract are paid out each year and again upon retirement, and an employee who resigns with two weeks’ notice is paid for unused sick days as well, so sick time isn’t simply forfeited if it goes unused.

That same contract also separates getting sick during a shift from taking a planned sick day: an employee who becomes sick while already on the job is paid for all the time already worked that day, a different rule from calling out before a shift starts.

Other UPS local supplements set their own numbers and rules, since sick leave is bargained locally. If you’re a UPS employee, your own local’s supplement, not a general UPS policy, governs your sick days and whether a note is required, and it’s worth pulling up your specific supplement rather than assuming a number a coworker at a different hub mentioned applies to you.

Non-union and management roles

UPS also employs non-union management, administrative, and some specialist staff who aren’t covered by a Teamsters contract. UPS hasn’t published a single public policy describing sick time or documentation rules for these roles, so if that’s your position, your manager or HR contact is your best source, not a general UPS-wide page. This is a genuinely different situation from a package car driver or hub employee’s, since a Teamsters supplement doesn’t apply to a non-union role even at the same facility.

State and city sick-leave laws still apply

UPS is headquartered in Georgia, which has no statewide paid sick leave law, but UPS employs hub and driver staff across every state, including several with their own paid sick leave laws that set independent documentation rules:

Where a state or local law sets a stricter documentation rule than your union contract, the law generally sets the floor.

When a doctor’s note is typically requested

As the Local 804 supplement itself shows, a well-run policy generally doesn’t require a note for a single sick day and shouldn’t automatically penalize using earned sick time. A note becomes more relevant for a longer absence, a return-to-work situation, or the start of a formal leave. A basic note only needs to state the dates involved and carry a signature, not a diagnosis. See what a doctor’s note should include.

Practical steps if you need to document an absence

Call out following your center or hub’s usual process, as early as your shift requires. Keep your own copy of anything you submit and note who you gave it to, since that record is what protects you if your center’s attendance tracking is ever disputed. For a leave long enough to need formal documentation, check with your local union steward or your center’s HR contact for how leave requests are handled in your area. UPS hasn’t publicly named a single national leave administrator the way some employers have, and a steward who has handled a similar request before can usually save you time over guessing at the process yourself.

Long leaves and FMLA are a separate process

An FMLA certification or a formal leave of absence goes through UPS’s own leave process for your local and your treating provider’s documentation, not a short online visit. CuroNote doesn’t provide FMLA certifications, disability forms, or fitness-for-duty clearances.

Where an online doctor’s note fits

A note from a real, state-licensed clinician carries the same standing whether the visit was online or in person. Neither UPS nor the Teamsters have published anything specific about online notes, so how it’s treated in practice comes down to your own supervisor and local supplement rather than a company-wide rule. CuroNote is launching soon and has no relationship with UPS or the Teamsters; a note from us doesn’t mean UPS has agreed in advance to accept it, and we make no claim of any partnership with UPS or any Teamsters local. CuroNote is not affiliated with UPS.

Frequently asked questions

Does UPS have one company-wide sick leave policy?
No. Most UPS employees are covered by the National Master UPS Agreement plus a local Teamsters supplement, and each supplement sets its own paid sick days and rules.
How many sick days do UPS employees get?
It depends on the local contract. The New York City-area Local 804 supplement gives full-time employees with a year of seniority eight paid sick days a year, and part-time employees five; other locals set different numbers.
Can UPS discipline me for using a sick day?
Under at least one publicly posted UPS union contract, paid sick days don't automatically count toward disciplinary action, and each employee's attendance record is reviewed individually rather than through automatic points. Rules can differ by local.
Does my state's sick leave law apply at UPS?
Yes. UPS employs workers across every state, and where a state or city has its own paid sick leave law, including New York, California, and Washington, it sets rules that apply on top of your union contract.
Can CuroNote handle an FMLA request for a UPS employee?
No. FMLA certification goes through UPS's own leave process for your local and your treating provider. CuroNote issues short, non-prescription notes for ordinary absences, not FMLA or disability paperwork.
