Does Home Depot accept a doctor's note for an absence? Home Depot's own benefits page confirms paid sick time accrues monthly for hourly associates, and its HR portal describes a manager-approved leave process for longer situations. Home Depot hasn't published a public rule on when a note is required for a single sick day, so ask your manager or HR partner.
Home Depot publishes more of its sick-time specifics than several of its retail peers, but its attendance-occurrence rules and note requirements stay internal. Here’s what’s actually public.
What Home Depot says about sick time and leave
Home Depot’s own careers benefits page states plainly how sick time accrues for hourly associates: full-time hourly associates earn 4 hours of sick time per month, or as required by law, and part-time hourly associates earn 2 hours per month, or as required by law. The “or as required by law” language matters, since it means associates in states or cities with more generous paid-sick-leave mandates get whatever that local law provides instead of the base company rate. The same page confirms 40 hours of vacation for full-time hourly associates and 20 hours for part-time hourly associates after six months, six paid holidays a year, and short-term disability eligible from the hire date for salaried and full-time hourly associates.
On leave of absence, Home Depot’s internal HR portal, myTHDHR, states that “the Home Depot realizes that associates may be faced with conditions beyond their control, such as medical, family or personal situations that require time off from work,” and that the company “may grant a variety of leaves of absence, subject to proper managerial approval.” The specific leave types, approval levels, and time allowed are detailed in Leave of Absence packets that require an employee login to view, so the exact mechanics aren’t publicly readable. To start a leave request, the portal directs associates to contact their manager or HR partner directly.
What isn’t public: Home Depot’s specific attendance-occurrence or points system, including how many missed days trigger discipline or when a doctor’s note is required for a single-day absence. If you need that answer for your store, it comes from your manager or HR partner, not from anecdotal accounts online, which vary and aren’t a reliable substitute for official policy.
How state and local sick-leave laws change the picture
Home Depot is headquartered in Georgia, which has no statewide paid-sick-leave mandate, but the company operates stores and distribution centers in states that do, and those laws generally set a floor that overrides Home Depot’s base accrual rate:
- Georgia, Home Depot’s home state, has no statewide paid-sick-leave law, so the base company rate (4 hours a month for full-time hourly associates) generally applies there absent a local ordinance. See Georgia doctor’s-note and sick-leave laws.
- California has a statewide paid-sick-leave law that is more generous than Home Depot’s base accrual rate, which is exactly the kind of case the “or as required by law” language in Home Depot’s own policy is built to cover. See California doctor’s-note and sick-leave laws.
- Illinois requires paid sick leave statewide, with Chicago adding its own ordinance. See Illinois doctor’s-note and sick-leave laws.
- New York has a statewide paid-sick-leave law, plus New York City’s own additional protections. See New York doctor’s-note and sick-leave laws.
If you work in one of these states, check the state page for what your law actually guarantees before assuming Home Depot’s national base policy is your only protection.
When a doctor’s note is typically requested
Independent of Home Depot’s specific, largely unpublished thresholds, the general pattern among large retail employers is to request documentation after several consecutive missed days rather than for a single sick day, mainly to confirm that an employee was seen by a provider. A note for that purpose needs the dates involved and a licensed provider’s signature; it doesn’t need to state a diagnosis. Under EEOC guidance, disability-related medical inquiries of current employees must be job-related and consistent with business necessity, a bar a routine short absence rarely clears.
Practical steps if you’re out sick
- Call out through your store’s usual process as early as you can, and ask your manager directly whether documentation will be expected if the absence runs past a day or two.
- Track your own sick-time accrual. Because the rate is monthly and modest (4 hours for full-time hourly, 2 for part-time), it’s easy to run short if you don’t check your balance before a longer illness.
- Keep your own copy of any note you submit, along with the date and who you gave it to.
- For anything longer than a few days, or a recurring condition, contact your manager or HR partner to start a leave-of-absence request rather than stacking single-day call-outs, since Home Depot’s own portal frames leave as a managerial-approval process, not an automatic one.
FMLA and longer absences
A serious health condition, your own or a family member’s, generally belongs in Home Depot’s formal leave-of-absence process, not a single doctor’s note. Associates who meet FMLA’s eligibility requirements (about 12 months of employment and 1,250 hours worked in the prior year, per the U.S. Department of Labor) can request job-protected leave with its own medical certification process, requested through your manager or HR partner per Home Depot’s own guidance. CuroNote does not provide FMLA certifications, disability paperwork, or fitness-for-duty clearances. Those requests need to start with Home Depot’s HR process directly.
Where an online doctor’s note fits
A note signed by a physician licensed in your state is a legitimate medical document whether the visit happened in person or online. Home Depot has not published a position on online doctor’s-note services, and nothing here should be read as Home Depot accepting, endorsing, or partnering with CuroNote. CuroNote is launching soon and does not yet issue notes; how a specific absence is handled remains Home Depot’s decision.
