Can you get a doctor's note for a school absence online? Yes. If a student is unwell, a US-licensed physician can review the symptoms through a quick online form and issue a same-day note to excuse a school absence, with no clinic or video visit needed in most states.

When you might need a note for a school absence

Schools often require a doctor's note to mark an absence as excused, especially after a sick day or several missed days. If a student is genuinely unwell and getting to a clinic is hard, an online review is a fast, legitimate way to get documentation for the school office. A parent or guardian completes the review for a minor.

What the note includes

The note confirms that the student reported being unwell and was advised to rest for the relevant dates. It does not diagnose or treat and isn't a prescription. It's a straightforward absence note from a licensed doctor, watermarked and able to be verified with your permission.

We focus on legitimate, low-risk notes. We don’t issue FMLA, disability, or fitness-for-duty paperwork, and we never diagnose, treat, or prescribe online.

How it works

  1. Tell us what’s going on

Answer a short, adaptive 2-minute form about your symptoms — not a static tick-box questionnaire.

  2. A clinician licensed in your state will review it

At launch, a licensed clinician will review your written answers, may ask a follow-up question, and can decline if a note isn’t appropriate.

  3. Get your note by email

At launch, notes will arrive as a PDF with a verification code. Turnaround targets will be published before we open.

If your symptoms are severe — trouble breathing, chest pain, confusion, a very high fever, or you feel you’re getting worse — seek in-person or emergency care. An online absence note is not a substitute for treatment.

How schools generally decide when a child can return

CDC guidance for K through 12 schools sets out general symptom-based criteria that many districts use as a starting point, though local policy has the final say. Under that guidance, a child can generally return once a fever has been gone for at least 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine, vomiting has resolved overnight with food and liquids staying down the next morning, and diarrhea has improved to no more than two bowel movements above the child’s normal count in a day. For respiratory symptoms such as a cough or runny nose, the same 24-hour rule applies: symptoms should be getting better overall, and any fever gone, for a full day before returning. These are general benchmarks, not a fixed calendar, since illnesses run different courses in different kids.

Most of the common reasons a student misses school, colds, seasonal viruses, a stomach bug, are short and self-limited. CDC’s school guidance is explicit that many common childhood illnesses can be managed at home without a clinic visit, and that requiring a provider visit solely to obtain a note can be an unnecessary burden on families, since it can mean extra time off work or an added copay for a visit that wasn’t otherwise needed. That’s the gap an online review is meant to fill: getting the school the documentation it asks for without turning a manageable illness into a second appointment.

When a school absence needs more than rest

A short absence note is meant for the ordinary case of a student who’s unwell for a day or a few days and needs rest. It isn’t the right tool for a condition that needs an actual exam or treatment plan, a new or worsening symptom that hasn’t been evaluated, or a fever that lasts several days. If a child has a high or persistent fever, a rash with fever, trouble breathing, or symptoms that improve and then come back, that calls for an in-person evaluation rather than a same-day note. Schools may also have separate, illness-specific policies (for conditions like strep throat) that call for their own return criteria, and those take precedence over general guidance.

What to tell the school office

A doctor’s note for a school absence doesn’t need to spell out a diagnosis to be valid. Under this service, the note confirms that the student was seen through an online review, reported being unwell, and was advised to rest for specific dates; a parent or guardian handles the review and consent for a minor. If the school’s attendance policy requires something more specific, such as a note for absences beyond a set number of days or one addressed to a particular office, it’s worth checking that policy before the absence rather than after, since excused-absence rules are set at the district level and vary from school to school.

Frequently asked questions

Who completes the review for a child?
A parent or legal guardian provides the information and consent for a minor. The note is then issued for the student's absence.
Will the school accept an online doctor's note?
A note signed by a licensed physician is a legitimate medical document. Attendance and excused-absence policies are set by each district, so check your school's specific requirements.
Can the note cover several missed days?
The doctor decides based on the reported symptoms. CDC guidance on respiratory illness supports a short rest period until symptoms are improving and any fever has been gone for 24 hours without fever-reducing medicine, and the note states the relevant dates.
Does the note say what illness the student had?
Often it doesn't need to. Many school notes simply confirm the student was advised to rest for the dates given, without naming a diagnosis.
Does the school need a doctor's note for every sick day?
Not always. CDC guidance notes that requiring a provider visit just to get a note can create an unnecessary burden for families, and many common childhood illnesses are managed at home. Individual district policy still decides what your school requires.
